As part of an inaugural Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) funded initiative, team UQ Cyber were proud to have delivered two separate workshop series with partners from Korea University and Blue Inc. (Tokyo) in late 2021.
Both workshops were delivered with the endorsements of the Australia-Korea and Australia-Japan Foundation organisations. Established in 1992 and 1976 respectively, the Foundations were established to promote bilateral relations between their countries and Australia.
The theme of these workshops focussed on promoting the cyber security sector with a focus on diversity and bilateral interdisciplinary research areas and were delivered in a 3-way hybrid format, with UQ hosting delegates on site, as well as via Zoom for participants dialling in from Australia, Korea and Japan.
Topics covered were broad and engaging:
- National Security and Cyber Policies (focusing on the Indo-Pacific region)
- Uplifting Security in Critical Infrastructure
- Preventing and combating cyber-attack at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics
- Diverse Workforce in Cybersecurity
- Interdisciplinary Cyber Security Education
Guest speakers from both countries included the former Korean ambassador to Poland, Head of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Brisbane, a former cyber security advisor to the President of the Republic of Korea, Chief Cyber Security Strategist of NTT Japan (a Japanese telecommunications company headquartered in Tokyo, akin to Telstra Australia) and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics cyber security and incident management team. Over 200 workshop participants participated in these information-sharing sessions which not only delivered insightful presentations but were also interactive through the various Q&A panel sessions. Workshop participants comprised of those working in industry, academia and research, government organisations and current UQ Cyber students.
