History of Team Oceania
2020 - 2022
Team Oceania was founded by UQ Cyber Research Centre’s director Professor Ryan Ko when he was invited by Kana Shinoda (Japan) and Ioannis Agrafiotis (UK/Greece/ENISA) in early 2020 to form a team for the Oceania Region, building on his previous experience establishing the New Zealand Cyber Security Challenge in 2014. After a few months in 2020, Ryan brought in Joshua Scarsbrook as a co-founder, and organised the first Oceania Cybersecurity Challenge in early 2022 to qualify the top youths from Oceania. Dr Abigail Koay joined the organising team as the third co-founder, and coordinated the logistics and team selection process with Ryan and Joshua. The first team of 17 players (15 players and 2 reserves) consisted of 11 Australians and 6 New Zealanders who travelled to Greece for the inaugural International Cybersecurity Challenge.

In 2026, Team Oceania took on the hosting role for the ICC community. For strong management of conflict, the steering committee consisted of 2 groups: Organising Team (Ryan Ko, Kana Smith, Joshua Scarsbrook, Rachel Wong) and Coaching Team (Jamie McClymont, Leon Bowie).
