Researcher biography

Hunter has started his research at UQ in mid-2026 after working in the finance industry for three decades. Academically, he received a Masters in Applied Finance from Macquarie University and Bachelor of Business Systems from Monash.

His career in banking has spanned IT, Data Management, Finance, Risk, Treasury and in the most recent decade lead Financial Crime teams at NAB and ANZ. This covered AML (Anti-Money Laundering), CDD/KYC (Customer Due Diligence and Know Your Customer), Sanctions, Insider Crime, as well as customer focussed fraud and scams domains. These leadership roles covered Analytics then progressing to take on operations, at the coal face of crime. Hunter was prominent in this time in both industry as the Secretary of the Interbank Fraud Forum and a secondee to Austrac’s Fintel alliance.

While the broader Financial Crime landscape is the context, the passion that has brought him from industry is Money Mules and their place and future in the fraud and scams environment.
